The Japanese newspaper Nikkei held an interview with Akamatsu in which they discussed his website “J-Comi”. At the end of the interview, he stated that he is planning to start a new manga series this summer. Although he didn’t give any details, he gave these personal comments about his future plans:
“It’s really hard to produce three hits in a row. I think I’ll retire when the next manga is over. I want a job like advertising books as a publishing agent or publishing e-books. Originally, I wanted to be an editor, since I like making creative environments for authors.”
Akamatsu debuted as a mangaka in 1993 and is well known for his romantic comedy works featured in Weekly Shonen Magazine, especially Love Hina and Mahou Sensei Negima. His three best-selling manga series have about 32 million copies in circulation, 19 million of which are of Negima alone.
In 2011, Akamatsu opened his website J-Comi, where visitors can read out-of-print manga for free. The site earns revenue through advertisements and gives all of the profits to the authors of the manga.
