A live action adaptation of Kiki’s Delivery Service has been confirmed. The movie will star 16 year old Koshiba Fuuka (小芝風花) as the movie’s title role character. Koshiba Fuuka is a new comer who made her debut in the 2012 Fuji TV drama Ikidemo dekinai Natsu (息もできない夏). The movie will be directed by Shimizu Takashi (清水崇). He is best known as the director of the JUON (呪怨) series of movies.
Known also as Majo no Takkyubin (魔女の宅急便), Kiki’s Delivery Service is a 1985 book by children’s literture author Eiko Kadano (角野栄子). It is about a young witch who according to tradition must live alone for a year when she turns 13 years old. The book was awarded the Noma Children’s Literature Award. A total of 5 sequels were written following the first book making it a 6 volume series. The final volume was published in 2009.
The book was adapted into an anime movie by Studio Ghibli in 1989. It was produced, scripted and directed by Miyazaki Hayao (宮崎駿). The movie was a hit and became the highest grossing movie in Japan for 1989.
The book was also been adapted into a musical in 1993. A revival for the musical was done in 1995 and 1996.
Kiki’s Delivery Service is scheduled to make it’s theatrical release next spring.
