Celebrities throw out the first pitches in baseball all the time. But Japan is probably the only country in which the voice actors/actresses from your favourite anime series are also asked to do the honours – cos that’s how big a deal the animation industry in Japan is.
Last year, Kaori Fukuhara, the voice of Tsukasa Hiiragi in Lucky Star, was asked to throw the first pitch for the Saitama Seibu Lions. In case you’re not a big fan of comedy gag anime Lucky Star, the Kasukabe city in Saitama prefecture is somewhat of a mecca to fans, since that’s where the show’s story is set in. Hence the Saitama Seibu Lions X Lucky Star connection.
And apparently, Kaori Fukuhara’s presence invigorated the crowd so well last year that the Seibu Lions have asked her to do the honours again for them this year. Fukuhara will once again throw the first pitch for the Lions’s June 23 game against the Orix Buffaloes.
Not only that – this time around, Fukuhara will be joined by Emiri Kato (Kagami Hiiragi in Lucky Star). The
Fire Hiiragi sisters unite!
The Saitama Seibu Lions are calling the event “Lucky Star Day Season 2″. As it just so happens to be Lucky Star’s 10th anniversary, anime fans who turn up at the baseball game will also be able to buy special goods, as well as limited DVDs containing series spin-off Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku.
Here’s a video of Fukuhara’s appearance at the “Lucky Star Day” baseball game last year:
