Dengeki Maou has revealed the first cast members of Non Non Biyori, a gentle comedy about four girls in a country town that’s so small, the school has only five students.
The anime Non Non Biyori is based on the manga of the same name by Atto. The story is set in a town that is so far in the countryside, it takes 20 minutes to reach the nearest bookstore by bicycle, a bus comes once every five hours, and there is only one school, which has five students. In this remote outpost, four girls casually spend their quiet days together.
The anime is being directed by Shinya Kawamo, who also worked on Kokoro Connect and .hack//Gift.
Rie Murakawa (Aoi from Vividred Operation, Arisa Matsuda from The Idolm@ster Million Live!) will voice Hotaru Ichijou, a fifth-grader who transferred to Asahigaoka Branch School from Tokyo. She is calm and mature for her age, but she also has a childish side and cries easily in certain situations.
Kotori Koiwai (Iwai from Dansai Bunri Crime Edge, Kigu from Joshiraku) will voice Renge Miyauchi, a six-year-old first-grader. She has an odd personality that no one understands and she often says “non” at the end of a sentence. She has a pet tanuki named “Gu” (“Ingredient”).
Ayane Sakura (Akane from Vividred Operation, Miyabi from NakaImo) will voice Natsumi Koshigaya, a cheerful seventh-grader who likes to tease people. She is bad at studying, but she knows a lot of random facts.
Kana Asumi (Nyaruko from Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, Yuno from Hidamari Sketch) will voice Komari Koshigaya, an eighth-grader and Natsumi’s older sister. She is short for her age and tries to act like an adult, but she gets scared easily.
Media Factory first announced the anime a few months earlier with this peaceful trailer:
Non Non Biyori will air this fall, while the manga has been serialized since 2009 and is available in five volumes. If you’re interested in peaceful slice-of-life comedies, you can start reading the series today.
