Veteran voice actor Kenji Utsumi, who voiced Alex Luis Armstrong in Full Metal Alchemist, Raoh in Fist of the North Star and Braiking Boss in Shinzou Ningen Casshern has passed away. He was 75 years old. He had been hospitalized in a Shinjuku hospital for peritonitis, a condition where the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs are inflamed.
Born in 1937, Kenji Utsumi was the youngest of 5 brothers. In 1955, he joined NHK’s theater company and began working on radio dramas. He made his anime debut in Ookami Shounen Ken (狼少年ケン) as One-eyed Jack. In 1984, he voiced Raoh, the primary rival and adversary to the main character Kenshiro in Fist of the North Star. That same year, he founded Ken Productions, a voice talent management agency. He received the life time achievement award during the third Seiyu Awards in 2009.
Kenji Utsumi’s passing is the second death in as many weeks involving a notable voice actor. Last week saw the passing of One Piece voice actor Takkou Ishimori. Kenji Utsumi is survived by his wife, fellow voice actress Michiko Nomura.
