5pb. is releasing an expanded-upon iteration of their bishoujo fighting game for the PS3 and Xbox 360, featuring fancy 2D sprites, quirky characters, and furious combat.
Phantom Breaker: Extra is an enhanced version of the fighting game Phantom Breaker which was first released in 2011 in Japan. An English version was supposed to be released in 2012 before it was unfortunately cancelled (read more about Phantom Breaker here on SGCafe).
A distinguishing feature of Phantom Breaker is that it doesn’t involve complicated button combinations like most fighting games, and there are two different modes, called Quick Style and Hard Style, which focus on speed and defense, respectively. In this version, there is a new Extra Style.
The story is centered around a group of fighters who receive a weapon called a Fu-mension Artifact from a mysterious man named Phantom. The fighters take part in a tournament in which Phantom will grant the champion’s wish.
In the opening movie, you can see all 18 fighters, including four new characters and the guest stars Kurisu from Steins;Gate and Rimi from Chaos;Head.
The song featured in the video, Blue Moon, is performed by Yumi Hara, who is famous for her role as Takane Shijou from The Idolm@ster. The game also features an ending theme performed by the rock duo Zwei, who performed the opening theme of Robotics;Notes.
You already saw the new characters in the opening movie, but if you want a better look, read about them below.
Sofia Kalganova (CV: Sumire Uesaka)
A cheerful, lively girl who hates losing. Her Twin Blade is an artificial F.A created in a Russian science academy. Her grandfather gave his life to create the weapon, which has left her family unhappy. Because of this, she has a grudge against Phantom.
Shizuka Saejima (CV: Ayaka Suwa)
A girl who was raised with strong militarist ideals. She is a former follower of Phantom, but she eventually changed paths, leading a coup d’e tat in the process.
Ende (CV: Yuu Kobayashi)
A calm girl who is a member of Schrödinger, a special force opposing Phantom. She fights using a robot named Nataku, which looks like a big, mechanical hand. She is an acquaintance of another character, Fin. Because of the difference in their personalities, they often get into fights.
Gaito and Rin (CV: Kentarou Itou/Yuka Ootsubo)
Gaito is a vicious warrior who uses an anti-spirit gem to weild enormous power. Rin is a six-year-old girl and the only person who can restrain Gaito.
Phantom Breaker: Extra will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 19. If we’re lucky, this game will do what its predecessor didn’t and make its way over to the West.
