Madoka Magica The Battle Pentagram will be hitting shelves only on December 19, but the creators are already letting fans know that it’s something they can look forward to by showing off the controls and some extra outfits for the game.
The main plot in The Battle Pentagram is fairly simple in that the main magical girls of Madoka Magica, Madoka, Homura, Mami, Sayaka, and Kyouko, are attempting to both stop Walpurgis Night from happening, and deepen their bonds with one another. The player will get to choose one of them to play as and from there the real magic begins.
Both the square button and triangle button will prove important during battle, as depending on which girl you play pressing the buttons will let you attack with a different type of weapon (triangle) or a different type of special magic (square).
In the case of battle scenes you will want to hit the triangle button at the right time to land a standard combo against the enemy. As you can probably imagine this is especially important for Homura with her multiple gun attacks.
The special magic gauge will also play a role, as pressing the square button will trigger that girl’s magical technique. For Madoka this is a Homing Arrow, Homura’s is an AT-4 Rocket Launcher, Mami uses her Tiero power, Sayaka’s power is known as Shooting Stinger, and Kyouko attacks with her Flying Lance magic.
Using these attacks will of course cost you a little bit of MP, so be sure to temper them with the standard attacks. It seems friendly-fire also exists, so take care not to hit your partner during all of this.
Speaking of partners, you will get a different combination magic event for each girl, so Sayaka and Madoka will have a different scenario than Mami and Kyouko.
Outside of the battle scenes, the main story was written by the original creator of the series, Gen Urobuchi, and should fit right in with the main series storyline.
Extra costumes have also been announced, letting you play as the girls in costumes they don’t usually wear: Mami in a sundress, Sayaka in pajamas, Madoka in a gym uniform, Homura in a bikini, and Kyouko in the school uniform for the other magical girls’ school.
Not only do they get to look good outside of battle, but they are also carried over into battle, letting you fire a rocket launcher as Homura in a bikini.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Battle Pentagram comes out for the PS Vita on December 19, priced at 5,980 yen in Japan.
