Mangaka Kenjiro Hata’s long-running butler comedy manga, Hayate the Combat Butler has now ended its long run. With this, he has revealed a brand new fanbook, which was included with the manga’s final two tankoubon compilation volumes, Vol. 51 and Vol. 52. And what’s more is that the fanbook will contain a bombshell revelation: Hayate and Maria are actually siblings.

RIP Hayate x Maria shippers, but then again, the manga’s ending was pretty clear on who won the Hayate Bowl (and it’s not Maria). Hata’s actually been experimenting with a few plot ideas, and he revealed in Vol. 51’s limited edition bonus fanbook that the two are indeed siblings. This does ask a lot more questions though…

Fans back in Japan greeted the revelation with shock, as Maria has long been considered one of the biggest contenders to Hayate’s heart for a long time. And then there’s the fact that he revealed it after the manga ended its serialization…

Hopefully, Hata can answer a few more questions about how Hayate and Maria got separated. But then again, it may most likely be thanks to their horrible parents who abandoned Maria in a church during Christmas and sold Hayate to some loan sharks…
