With the 20th Pokemon movie hitting Japanese theaters in July, as well as looking back into Ash and Pikachu’s first meeting, it would only be fitting that Pokemon also update the anime’s very first OP! Rica Matsumoto, who voices Satoshi/Ash in the Japanese version, once again sings the first OP song, but this time, with a 20th anniversary update.

The updated version is titled “Mezase Pokémon Master -20th Anniversary-“, and unlike the original, this new version comes with an orchestral accompaniment. It will serve as the official theme song for Pokemon the Movie 20: I choose you!. Matsumoto will also be releasing the song as a single on June 28, 2017.

Most international Pokemon fans might not be familiar with the original OP because they might be more familiar with the first English OP, which was performed by Jason Paige. Speaking of whom, here he is singing the song once again.

Now compare with the original Japanese theme:

As for the 20th movie itself, it hits theaters in Japan on July 15, 2017. It will take a look back on Ash and Pikachu’s first journey away from Pallet Town, as well as their meeting with the legendary Ho-oh.
