One Piece is long… really long. And just saying that fact would be a bit of an understatement. However, on his latest mangaka’s column on Weekly Shounen Jump! magazine, creator Eiichiro Oda revealed one of the reasons why One Piece is so long.
According to Oda himself, it’s actually the Seven Warlords of the Sea (the Shichibukai)’s fault for the series running for 20 years by now. He revealed that One Piece was only supposed to run for five years, with Luffy and the gang only going up against the Yonkou or four emperors. However, having seen how cool the Seven Warlords he created were, it spiraled into a long-running series. As to why he made Seven Warlords instead of just five or four, he revealed that he just thought it would be cooler.
So, One Piece was just supposed to last for five years until Oda realized that the Seven Warlords he created were too cool… Yeah, that sounds like what he would do. But then again, he already has the series mapped out until its ending, so the Seven might not be the only factors why it has lasted for so long.
