With the new Fall 2017 anime slowly premiering one by one, it’s safe to say that the Summer 2017 anime season is now officially over. The previous season introduced plenty of great anime, and sadly, many of them have already ended. For this SGCafe list, we take a look at seven anime which ended last season which we thought stood out.
However, please take note that we are only looking at anime which concluded last season and not the ones which are continuing onto Fall. This means that we’re not including series like Fate/Apocrypha and Welcome to the Ballroom as they’re still ongoing. We are including anime which are continued from Spring to Summer though, given that they concluded last season. And without further ado, here are our picks:
Classroom of the Elite
This psychological school anime looks like it’s a love child between Baka & Test and My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. It blends in classroom and school politics well, and the three main characters really do remind me of Yui, Yukino, and Hachiman from My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. It’s plot twists kept me at the edge of my seat and kept me hook, so it’s safe to say that the anime really stood out.
To be honest, Gamers is one huge mess of an anime… in a good way. The relationship chaos brought about by the five main cast members was the highlight as misunderstandings, miscommunication, and gaming culture brought this beautiful mess of an anime together. And we couldn’t stop laughing at how much trouble these guys have caused each other too!
Re:Creators premiered back in Spring 2017 but in ended last season, so it definitely gets considered… big time. When the anime first premiered back in April, we were hooked as it played with the various genres, tropes, and stereotypes in the anime, manga, light novel, and gaming industries. The series was a fantastical kitchen sink of an anime, featuring a magical girl, robots, a mage, a steampunk detective, hot-blooded shounen anime characters, and more. It takes a lot to pull together all those genres and make a good anime, and we’re gonna say it, Re:Creators pulled it off!
While Gamers is a romantic comedy mess (in a good way), Tsurezure Children focused on various couples and their love lives. While it only runs for about 11 minutes, the anime kept fans excited with all everything going on with the anime’s main couples. Let’s just say we were glad Aniplus Asia picked this series up.
Made in Abyss
Arguably the best anime of the season (it’s my honest opinion, please don’t sharpen your pitchforks), the series itself is pretty dark, especially with a spunky little girl as its main character. This adventure/survival anime has introduced plenty of great characters, an interesting storyline, and it really makes you wanna root for the main characters… and that’s even before they introduced the series’ breakout character, Nanachi (she’s that humanoid rabbit-looking thing in the visual). The series also tugged at hearts and will genuinely make people blame those ninjas cutting onions.
Fastest Finger First
First of all, yes, Fastest Finger First is its actual official English title. Now that we have that out of the way, we’re gonna say the this is probably one of the most underrated anime this season. Based on quiz shows, the anime follows a quiz bowl team as they compete with other schools. The anime itself is really exciting, and you just can’t help trying to answer some of the questions yourself.
Set in an alternate steampunk world where Britain is divided into two countries, Princess Principal takes the concept of the “Prince and the Pauper” and places it in the intrigue-filled world of spies. Full of clandestine suspense and lovable characters, the series was fun to watch.
Knights & Magic
This fantasy anime combines the alternate fantasy world genre and adds GIANT ROBOTS. It has plenty of action which keeps fans at the edge of their seats and makes fans want more. And yes, we want a season 2 for this!
So, there you have it folks, our picks for concluded anime which stood out last season. What was your favorite anime from Summer 2017?
