Studio Ghibli Producer and co-founder, Toshio Suzuki, recently held an event to promote his new non-fiction book, Minami no Kuni no Kanyada. And during that event, he dished out on what’s happening with Hayao Miyazaki’s next movie project, Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka (How Do You Live?).
Suzuki revealed that Miyazaki’s new anime movie might be premiering in about 3-4 years. He also revealed that they’re doing things in this new movie that Studio Ghibli itself is doing things that it “could never do before”. The Ghibli producer also noted that they’ve been producing the movie for about two tears now.
As for Miyazaki’s new project itself, the movie’s title comes from Genzaburou Yoshino’s 1937 masterpiece novel of the same name. Miyazaki explains that the book’s title plays an important role for the movie’s protagonist. As for the book itself, it centers on a man named Koperu and his uncle, as well as his own personal and spiritual growth.
Previously, Miyazaki suggested that the movie could be done by 2019, just before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, Ghibli producer, Toshio Suzuki, has stated that it would be impossible, as Miyazaki has only done 20 minutes worth of storyboards at that time.
During an NHK TV special, the legendary Ghibli director, who has retired from directing feature-length movies, has announced his plans to return. Hopefully, we can get a new Oscar run for the great director, who is also the only anime director from Japan to ever win an Academy Award.
