yes, as stupid as it sounds, IPOS accepeted the word "Cosplay" as a non-dictionary word(it isn't to begin with).

with the registrant providing the services mentioned in http://tmsearch.ipos.gov.sg/eTMSearc...TmNo=T0412796D

there is no reason for IPOS to refuse the registration.

Hmmm... I knew they won't accept overly generic terms as stated in point (d) of Darth_me's post...

Maybe they thought the use of 2 generic terms as one was unique...

I'm a little unclear with these issues of trademark so please bear with me if I repeat anything. So basically this means if anyone wants to hold any cosplay events in Singapore using any title that incorporates the word 'cosplay' in it, they would not be able to do so as Tan Yueh Han (Takahan?) has taken a trademark on it?

If that is the case, my only reaction is...WTH?

Trademarking 'cosplay' is rather verging onto despotic behaviour, isn't it?

And I find it interesting that application date for this trademark was Aug 2004...If Mr Tan Yueh Han is really Takahan, and I'm saying IF, then the SCC has been keeping secrets from the cosplaying community...

So what have we learned today... cosplay should be regarded and referred to as 'cosplay' in its entirety and any alteration to it's spelling is considered criminal.

Just as one is able to refer to the ever-popular suger-saturated-non-alcoholic soda drink as Coke and/or Coka-Cola(both of which are registered trademarks of the Cola-Cola Company)...

Wow! In this case Singapore Cosplay Club could be in trouble. They have infringed the trademarks rights of "cosplay" in all they have done. And somemore it is not officially registered (I made a check through the government database) It will seem that they cannot register it for until 2014 as "Cosplay" is a cannot use word.
Maybe we should get together and appeal to the IPOS that cosplay is a common term or else SCC will one day get into trouble with this person who registered the trademark.

Erm...if Tan Yueh Han and Takahan are the one and the same, then I hardly think SCC will get into any legal shennigans for using the word 'cosplay'...

So you mean to say Tan Yueh Han = Takahan and Singapore Cosplay Club = SCC Square? I am sorry becos I am new in cosplayer. In fact I have not started cosplaying but I have been wanting to cosplay since last year.

there is no evidence that Singapore Cosplay Club (SCC) is in anyway related to SCC Square.

SCC might not get involved in any legal actions also. Please do not assume that SCC has infringed the trademark law.

there are many other ways of using a trademark'ed word/logo, so long that the 'new' user, is able to redesign the word/logo, in a way which is able to allow the public to differenciate clearly, the different parties and the service they provides..

i thought cosplay is a freelance hobby
