At that time, it's all real hardwork... and quality releases..
The animes back then were quality too... (not in artwork but more in plot) but nowadays it's all about the money.

Lain was released about the same time as Cowboy Bebop. Just about 5 years before, there was Eva (but I'm not a fan of that show).

I saw the Odex sub for Lain.... its really shitty. In fact, I saw the sub for Tokikake last night, and I'm suspecting (oddly) that it may be different from the cinematic sub I saw last year. But hey: I could be wrong.

My guess ? Some of the subs are done by Odex themselves... and they don't show effort.

Anyway, there are fansubs for Lain, but they pretty much came after the 2000 period. 1998 was still the late VHS era before bittorent, and fansubs at the time, if any, were hardmade VHS illegal releases Stateside.

Of course, CD-rom changed all that.

I fainted at the D Gray Man subs. Is MDA censoring references to Christianity as well?

Odex is full of fail in the beginning. The combination of Odex and MDA just made them a even bigger of a failure.

If MDA is censoring references to Christianity, you probably wouldn't get Bruce Almighty, Constantine and the few others movies and televisions programs that is touching that topic. Of course who can forget Da Vinci Code? It's obvious that it's not MDA that guides Odex's knife.

If Trinty Blood and The Ancients (of D Gray Man) isn't proof enough. Of course it will be nice to know the religious belief of the people behind Odex.

MDA IS responsible for it, just that MOVIES and on-air TV have different levels of regulation. TV is stricter because almost everyone has access to it.

Still, I can safely proclaim this: anime, as a hobby and a lifestyle, in Singapore, is dead. Period. Enjoy your capitalist crap.

And this reminds me of a chapter in Matt Mason's The Pirate's Dilemma: "Keeping It Real." Cookie points if you can relate that chapter to this news.
for channel 56...
last time their anime are from taiwan's chinese dub and chinese sub...
but those chinese dub and subs are basically not disgusting at all...
and for "nudity" scenes (Gashbell etc), they do not edit it or anything...
but for Death Note's 2nd opening... they were no allowed to show it (i guess)
they just continue to use the 1st opening for it... (still way better than changing the song to slideshows and put elegant waltz music ()
but more to the recent years, they are dirtied by Odex's anime
(and Odex dub are in chinese... with very heavy china accent... or maybe its just that their chinese are DISTINCTION level??)

and for Animax 84

their subbing is nice (at least better than Odex rite?)
(im not sure bout the dubs, coz i just switch the voice to jap)
but they repeatly show anime from more of the old years...
but they do have new animes like FMA brotherhood
and they are going to have Bleach from the very very beginning episode... starting from (i think) 18 dec...
(its like so long after its whipping up a shinigami craze already...)

and about Odex sub...
from those anime that i watch on channel U and channel 56...
they often like to leave the character MUTE if they doesnt want to sub/dub it.
its like...
you can see the mouth moving, u can hear the audio... but theres no sub...
and sometimes its worst, they dont even give it a voice, just let the lip dance and expect that the audience know lips-reading.
