Fansubs cater to the more internet savvy people who doesn't watch TV anymore, which, despite what most people might say here, are considered the minority amongst Singaporeans.

TV still has the biggest reach. Do most of the people here understand the slightest bit of Japanese? Do most of them bother themselves to check if the subbing was correct, unless the plot diverts a chunk load off from the main storyline? I'm sorry to say, but the answer is a 'No'.

So obviously, TV>fansubs in terms of exposure, though both increase sales.

Wrong.

The more heavily fansubbed and accessible the series, the better the sales for merchandise. I experience it over the last few years as one selling such Merchandise.

All the figures I sell out are for series that had been heavily fansubbed or easily accessible. For those that aren't I sell almost NOTHING.

Recents eries as examples: Kurogane no Linebarrels & Tower of Druaga. I barely get ANY interest at all for their merchandise. In fact nobody even ordered a single merchandise relating to Linebarrels.

You honestly think Hatsune Miku and the other Vocaloids became popular here because they are legitimately available? Heck, the software is so heavily downloaded you wouldn't believe it and thats even before i even go to fan music vids (most made with pirated software too). Fate/Stay Night, Clannad, Gundam... heck Nanoha! How the heck do you guys think they got so popular here even though their Anime did not air here?

Heck, biggest joke would be Macross Frontier. It didn't air here, so how come there are so many fans all of a sudden during AFA hmm?

Or some might be random ppl like auntie uncles or parents of kids who pass by and wanna go in. And there, u got the crowd.

For Aniki, ppl hear u shout ANIKI, all follow and act to blend in.

"I left a time bomb at AFA, and sure as hell enjoyed watching everyone shit their pants!"

Improbable in Singapore, probably, but if it was in a Convention somewhere else in the world and this happened, I dare you to say the same thing when this shit makes the headlines.

That's a little extreme in terms of analogy, don't you think?

But otherwise, point taken. Also, mechbear was trying to point out not to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Bak to the topic, Tts pretty obvious. If u wanna watch a anime but its not sub and u don understand = u don wanna watch.

IF its subbed, u understand the storyline and find tt its good = u understood the anime.

WHEN u know abt the series and u wanna buy some things like figu/files/badge/cups/ etc. its then u would buy.

IMHO, i m not a person to anyhow buy mechandse without knowing the series.

@turtle0411

... I don't get what you are trying to drive at.

Anyway, from a neutral point of view, I see it as that the general public uses TV instead of fansubs as a medium to obtain their anime intake. Let's use the more popular 'anime' for now; all of them started from manga first, ie, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, TRC... heck, even the Gundam craze started with Channel 8's airing of Gundam Wing almost 15 years back.

You can put entirely onto 'subbed' anime for affecting merchandise purchases; the general medium that is readily available, like manga or TV, will always be the main attracting factor. Although I must agree that as the years go by, and as more Singaporeans get tech-savvy, they will find other ways to get it faster, which will inevitably be directed to fansubs.
