it's pretty much a DUH!? kind of thing. just look at gunpla sales. there's a reason why W and SEED series are moving off the shelves rather quickly, and not those from other gundam series. heck, even gundam 00 suffered poor sales until Okto started airing gundam 00 S1 asking it in another way, would you buy a figure of a character you absolutely do not know and have never seen before? |

Honest ah, Maybe lets not say anime. Lets say Kamen Rider. I wouldn't have like bought like 2 Dx belts, each costing about $70 fo cosplay if it wasn't for Fansubs. If you die die wan 2 say anime ah, I buy Gunplas onli after watching the series.

Definitely a yes since without them we wouldn't even know about the anime? (For me, I don't like chasing animes on TV)

not dubbed, just suck-ed. yes, they messed up names (of characters, places, technical terms, etc), totally mis-translated the backstory of the enact, and invented their own characters. since when have commander Sergei used words like "Yo"? back on topic. yes, need to watch before buy. |

The basis behind the topic's origin relies on the assumption that anime could earn back their production cost and more through merchandises. So what happens to works that do not have or little of such merchandise potential? They will be overlooked in favour of other works that will net the studios cash. Artists will then have to force themselves to come up with mainstream moe designs for their female characters, drag out their "was-once-a-big-hit-but-studio-refuses-to-let-it die-so-i-came-up-with-crap-story-lines" series and think up of different reasons to don their characters in different outfits so that more figurines can be made. Fansubs may increase merchandise sales through spreading of awareness. However that doesn't seem a good enough reason by itself for studios to stop discouraging fansubs.

And .... most animation series depends on licensing of their copyrights to distributors(*for TV/VCD/DVD, etc..*), merchandiser (*for toys/figures/accessories*), etc.... to make a profit. Of course when they are showing on their local jap tv station, they received licensing fee for it and TV station earned from telecasting these animes with commercials or pay-for-a-fee to watch anime channel like animax, etc... So depending just on merchandising alone is not enough to pay all the animators, seiyuus, producers, etc.... and like Darkonlore said, only very popular animes benefit from merchandising. | |
