Smile Maybe we should be thankful?

I was taking a bath thinking about ToraDora, a series that would be showed today over Okto.

It suddenly hit me.

For Okto to get anime and BROADCAST it legally with just a week behind is really something. I mean i haven't heard of American channels getting it THAT fast still.

I know it's being subbed by Xedo but i guess this is something we should give thanks for eh?

Don't just anyhow grab it, sub and broadcast. Any decent fansubber can do better than that. Just getting exclusive rights to get the content early doesn't mean much if quality is compromised.

They should give it out in HD, but then again that's Mediacorp's/gahmen fault.

A good first step for them? Maybe.
Can they do better? Definitely.

Yea the quality cmi. but like you said i find it a good first step. if u were to rmb xedo is a business, you'll understand why their freeto air anime quality is not up to standard.

Still yea

Boils down to one thing.

Money.

Good translators don't come easily. My sister works as a technical writer, but she also does Chinese > English and English > Chinese translations for their manuals and technical documents. Her boss told her that it was difficult finding an appropriate person for the job, because fluently bilingual people aren't that common, even in a country which teaches students two languages from the moment we step into school.

Imagine Japanese > English/Chinese translation. Not saying there aren't talented people here, but that it's more expensive to hire them.

The anime industry still isn't terribly huge in Singapore. I can't imagine that they make much, really, what with our blatant piracy. (Not going into a discussion of right or wrong here. I'm also not defending ODEX's previous actions, so don't flame me. Just stating my opinion.)

There'll always be people who watch anime on the TV, so I suppose they'll get by with the revenue from the TV channels. Doubt their quality will jump dramatically soon, though. Too little budget. (Since their boxsets are going for dirt-cheap these days, plus people aren't really keen on buying their stuff now...)

Thoughts?

EDIT :

Just to add on... I do believe that they have to start producing higher quality fare if they want to keep going. Still... I doubt it'll happen soon.

More importantly, they need a change of heart. Their past actions alienated them from their potential market, and they probably have to spend on PR fixes before they can get accepted again.

I'd believe that they would have done way better by doing their part to sponsor some cosplay events like EOY, hand out freebies once in a while and at the same time gently bringing out the message that buying their products goes a long way to help those animation studios in Japan, rather than blatant lawsuits which just makes matters worse.

As said many times, if Chuang Yi can build a good reputation, why can't they do the same? Scanlations are just as rampant as subs, if not more widespread.

I'm waiting for the release of Haruhi season 2 before I make any decisions.

And.....

Precisely.

Odex has a long road to go. Hopefully, this whole witch-hunt would be a thing of the past.

Well, Chuang yi doesn't clamp down on ppl who read or download mangas unlike our dear Odex and beside, i find Chuang Yi rather slow on publishing mangas except Naruto and Bleach so i normally buy from Tong Li or Kadowaka.

Bear in mind that there is an English market.

I don't like imports, firstly for their price, and secondly, for their quality (as in language translation, extras provided and so on)

While I don't doubt Tong Li and Kadokawa are better, I'm kinda limtied to English and Malay. Errr.... yeah.

Hmm, got to admit the the price is indeed higher but those imported mangas are of higher quality. ( Means the paper won't turn yellowish after a period of time) which is a big boon if you want to sell them in the future.

English mangas are very ex though, always drain all my money last time when i was obsessed with reading english words.

All the above mentioned are not completed yet what except 00 season 1. I thought Odex normally won't come out anime cds if they r not completed except those long and popular one such as Bleach, One piece etc.

How are they even going to sell Toradora and Casshern Sins when both shows haven't finished yet? Considering that what they're broadcasting on TV is the broadcast version and not actually the fixed DVD versions, there isn't much of a reason for them to sell unless they're crazy enough to sell at Broadcast Quality.

They did sell Gundam 00 at AFA though. Though if I remember correctly it's just episodes 1-5.
