Japan’s Yuka Sato claimed the first gold medal in Youth Olympic Games history when she won the triathlon event. The 18-year-old Yuka was ahead of Australia’s Ellie Salthouse and United States’s Kelly Whitley.

She completed the entire event which involves a 750-meter swim, twenty kilometer bike ride and finally a five kilometer run, eventually winning in 1 hour 49.69 seconds and earning the first gold medal in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore.

Singapore’s Clara Wong came in 30th out of the 32-strong field in 1hr 21min 30.85sec. Two competitors did not complete the event after being involved in a crash during the bicycle leg.
