Anime Festival Asia 2011 (AFA 2011) September media preview has ended with a bang as the festival organisers unleashed a fury of juicy details for anime and pop culture fans. This year, the event steps up to a new level and we will go straight into the details.

As many have already known, AFA 11 will be will be held between 11 to 13 November 2011 in Suntec Convention Centre, the event expects to draw a huge crowd this year with major content providers such as Aniplex presenting top quality content.

This year, the theme of the concert “Rock Your Soul” have confirmed the largest gathering of anisong artistes in AFA history. Expect a marathon of anisong concert over the course of 3 days with the first day kicking off with the Asian premier of Hatsune Miku 3D concert.

Ticket sales will begin from 1 October 2011 via SISTIC.

Fans who want to get premium seating can purchase a 1-Day VIP concert ticket for $$148 or a 3-Day concert ticket at S$368. For casual concert goers, there is a standing concert ticket priced at S$48 for 1 day. Premium tickets can expect fan treats. Both tier of tickets will allow access to day stage and festival events.

Kalafina is the latest project by hit composer Yuki Kajiura, the genius behind FictionJunction and See-Saw, keeping Kajiura’s signature new age and synthesizer sounds.

The trio debuted with ‘Oblivious’ from the Original Video Animation Kara no Kyoukai, released in January 2008, with ‘sprinter/aria’ and ‘fairytale’ following in the same year. The three singles all hit top 10 spots on the Oricon Weekly charts. Their Oricon success has continued with their subsequent singles and two albums, all reaching top 10 spots.

Debuting with ‘Reichin Rin’inshan’ ending theme to Kikokugai: The Cyber Slayer (2002), Kanako Itou is one of the Japanese gaming industry’s most prolific artistes, with more than eighty songs to her name. She is known for her songs “Kanashimi no Mukō e” from the School Days game, ‘F.D.D’ from the Chaos;Head and her most recent release has been ‘Hacking to the Gate’ from the Steins;Gate animation.

She has performed at many events in Japan and around the world. Itou has performed for three consecutive years at the anisong’s largest event, Animelo Summer Live. Her overseas events include trips to Brazil and South Korea. Her 10th year anniversary event was held this year on the 13th of August in the Shibuya Liquid Room

Hatsune Miku is a computer music software that enables users to create synthesized vocals of unprecedented quality and remarkable realism by just typing in lyrics and melody, using voice samples of seiyuu Saki Fujita. Powered by Yamaha’s Vocaloid (Vocal + Android) technology, Hatsune Miku was developed by Crypton Future Media in Sapporo, and released on August 31st, 2007.

Since then, there have been more than 30,000 songs and movies about Hatsune Miku posted in a popular Video sharing web site such as YouTube and Nico-Nico- Douga(Japan). In 2008, Hatsune Miku performed for the first time on stage at Animelo Summer Live 2009 in front of a crowd of more than 25,000 people.

This simple software, with a cute voice and an illustration of its avatar on the cover, created not only large amounts of CGM (consumer generated media) music but remarkable numbers of derivative illustrations and dedicated free software as well.

Anime Festival Asia will premiere the first Hatsune Miku concert in Asia. The concert will be a sequel to the most recent live production in Sapporo, which pushed the live Miku experience to a whole new level.

Made up of Suzuko Mimori, Sora Tokui, Mikoi Sasaki and Izumi Kitta, Milky Holmes is the representative unit of the hit anime and PSP game Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, performing both the theme songs and voicing the main characters.

The unit was formed in 2010 and performed in Animelo Summer Live at Saitama Super Arena in August the same year. During Anime Festival Asia X, the four performed to a sell-out crowd during their main stage segment.

In 2011, Milky Holmes embarked on a sell-out nation-wide tour of Japan, performing in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. They released their third mini-album in August and in September, a live DVD of their performance in Yokohama BLITZ was released.

With their catchy songs and groovy choreography, Milky Holmes wants to bring a smile to everyone’s faces and have them enjoy songs such as Ameagari no Mirai, Seikai wa hitotsu! Jyanai!!and Koi no Chousahoukokusho.

From Anime Festival Asia’s very own Moe Moe Kyun maid cafe comes the latest Anisong idol unit to debut in Japan, Sea☆A! Made up of Winnie, Beryl, Valerie and Estelle, Sea☆A hopes to capture the hearts and minds of anime fans, both in Japan and overseas, with their own special brand of appeal.

Their first single, Dream Shooter, has been featured as the third ending theme of the hit TV anime, Cardfight!! Vanguard. Their next single, ‘DELI-DELI☆DELICIOUS’, will be the ending theme of Toriko. Come end November, the girls will be performing at the prestigious Animax Musix 2011, in Yokohama Arena, alongside names such as May’n, Shoko Nakagawa and angela.


AFA 11 Anime Theatre

This year, the organisers are launching a AFA 11 Anime theatre found in “Akiba Town” which will feature back-to-back anime playing during the event. Expect anime such as Full Metal Alchemist: The Star of Milos, Sora no Otoshimono: A clockwork Angeloid, Naruto Shippuden: The Blood Prison.

Many anime fans will be pleased as 3 popular anime in Japan have been confirmed to be as stage highlights. To begin with, lets start off with :3

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

One of the most popular anime in 2011, catch Akemi Homura’s seiyuu Chiwa Satou as she does an exclusive live dubbing. Atsuhiro Iwakami, the producer behind the anime will also be present on the main stage to share his expereince in working on Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero in two separate segments (more below)

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi ha mada Shiranai (Anohana)

The anime that brought many fans to their tears with its powerful and emotional storyline. Join acclaimed character designer “Masayoshi Tanaka” and the anime producer Shunsuke Saitou as they share insights into creating this anime.

Fate / Zero

The highly anticipated anime which is coming out soon.  Atsuhiro Iwakami, the producer behind Fate/Zero will share his insights but that’s not all. LiSA, who is behind the anime’s opening theme will also be appearing on the day stage to perform the anime’s opening theme song. And if you have not been following our news (which you should!), Fate / Zero will be streaming simultaneously with eight different subtitles on Sunday, 2nd October on Nico Nico Channel online outside of Japan for free.

Gundam Unicorn 4: At the Bottom of the Gravity Well

Together with Japan, Gundam fans can look forward to watching Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn 4 during the festival at the main stage

Other Guests

There will be other guests in AFA 2011 who will be gracing the stage such as Go Nakanishi, the producer of the hit band “angela”. His latest works include Mardock Scramble 2and also developing anime hits such as Sokyuu no Fafner, Inukami and Negima.

KANAME, celebrity cosplayer who have attended the previous AFA will be returning as a cosplay ambassador. He will be having a photo-taking session with his fans and return as a distinguished guest.

Danny Choo, one of the well-known bloggers from Japan will be taking on the role as the official host for AFA 11 stage activities. He will also be presenting a special Culture Japan Season 2 session on stage.

Other highlights

Maid and Butler cafes will be returning again with their branding. We were greeted with a special preview of new maids and butlers. Atelier Royale will transforming itself into a “Wonderland” theme.  Here is a photo of the new maids and butlers with anisong artiste LiSA.

This is where you will find exclusive merchandise from various anime titles. The brands that have been confirmed include Bushiroad, Bandai, Cospa, Nitro+, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company and more.

Bandai has also announced that they will be bringing exclusive merchandise for One Piece and releasing special dvd releases of Gundam Unicorn 4 in limited quantity. They will be introducing a AR technology app for Apple iPods/iPads, so One Piece fans with Apple devices, you know what to do.

Bushiroad’s Kidani has also shared about large scale card game tournaments and content in AFA11, we will be expecting some high levels of excitement from local trading card game players.

Cool Japan Forum

For the first time, Cool Japan will be priced at S$85 per delegate. The forum returns with speakers and panellists from Japan’s entertainment industries, they will be putting on a strong focus on Music, Novels, Anime and Digital Content. In addition to the renowned novelist Hirano Keiichiro which was announced back then, the lineup of speakers will include Mr. Takaaki Kidani, president of Bushiroad Inc. Mr Haruhiko Mikimoto, legendary character designer and Sampei Yamaguchi, Sony Music Artists’ Senior Vice President.

Ticketing and pricing

AFA 2011 will be held in Suntec Convention Hall 402 to 404. Tickets to the festival start from S$8 onwards for a basic one-day pass, $18 ticket will allow day stage access. Both tickets will be available for online as well as at the event location in October.

During the media event today, LiSA made a special appearance despite her busy schedule. She shared her thoughts about first visit to Singapore as well as her role as Yui in Angel Beats! Of course, those are positive but it is definitely entertaining. Like other guests, they visited the Merlion, which was rather interesting to her.
