Viacom International Media Networks and Asian online games company GigaMedia Limited announced new developments in their multi-year partnership around the first Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based upon Nickelodeon’s global smash hit, SpongeBob SquarePants.

The SpongeBob SquarePants MMOG will launch first in Taiwan in 2012 followed by rollout in multiple languages for players in China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia and India. Designed to appeal to broad demographics, players can play as characters including SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and others.

Full details of the game’s content, objectives, rules, challenges, customization elements and add-on enhancements will be announced in 2012 but this game will be adopting a free-to-play model. It uses the Unity game engine from Unity Technologies, an integrated development system for browser-based 3D games, and as a multiplatform tool it is also used for iPhone, Wii, PC, and Mac games.
