Robotics;Notes, 5pb’s upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 visual novel and the spiritual successor to Steins;Gate, will be adapted into an anime series and air on FujiTV’s noitaminA time block beginning in October, 5pb president Chiyomaru Shikura announced at the Odaiba-based TV station’s “2012 noitaminA Line-up” press conference today. Production I.G will be handling the adaptation.

At the press conference, Shikura (who was here in Singapore last year to perform in a duo with Kanako Itou at Anime Festival Asia 2011)  said that he believes fans who thoroughly enjoyed 2011’s hit time-travel anime (oh… wait… Madoka was also about…) Steins;Gate last year will not be disappointed in this new work, as the team behind Robotics;Notes (the visual novel) are the exact same folks who did Steins;Gate.

Tagline in red  ticker-tape: “The ones who’ll save this world are not heroes… they’re otaku.”

Robotics;Notes is the third in 5pb and Nitroplus’s “Science Adventure” series, and is set in the same universe as Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate, taking place  in 2019 which is several years after the latter.

The genre this time, however, is not “suspense” or “thriller” like it was with the first two entries. In previous interviews, 5pb described Robotics;Notes as a “hot-blooded youth adventure story about a bunch of students overcoming various tough obstacles to achieve a nigh-impossible goal”.

The story revolves around a group of high school students who’re members of the school’s robotics research club. Although initially the members were happy to spend their days dickering around – the main character spends almost all of his club activity time playing fighting games – the group eventually comes up with an over-ambitious plan to recreate a gigantic robot when faced with the threat of club disbandment. As with previous “Science Adventure” titles, the visual novel/anime promises lots of references to real-world scientific developments and events.

The visual novel is scheduled for a June 28 release on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Here’s a trailer:
