Masaaki Yuasa from Production I.G has started a Kickstarter fund for his latest animation project, “Kick-Heart“.

Kick heart would be a love story between Romeo a pro wrestler who is a secret masochist while in the wrestling ring and Juliet, a nun who leads a double life as a wrestler and has some sadist inclinations. Their story is set against the colorful backdrop of the professional wrestling world.

Masaaki reasons that with the current culture due to the economic situation in Japan, investors for a project that is more artistically driven are hard to come by, investors would go for more familiar properties like Manga/Light Novel conversions to anime and it is hard for original animations to come to life in that environment. Masaaki reasons that the project could be crowd-funded and it could be a new method of getting funding for animations.

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Every project creator sets their project’s funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers’ credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.

The minimum that anyone can begin pledging to the project is at $1 USD and the more that is pledge the more stuff you get as a token of appreciation.

For example a pledge at $15  will net you a SD Digital download of the completed anime while the maximum of $10000 will net you the following :

  • A private tour of Production I.G
  • A dinner with the Kick Heart’s Director, Masaaki Yuasa, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, the CEO of Production I.G and Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost in the Shell)
  • Travel and Accomodation(1 night) in Tokyo
  • Blu-ray (1080p)
  • “Kick-Heart” HD Digital Download (720p)
  • “Making of Kick-Heart” Digital Download (720p)
  • Character Designs PDF
  • Background Art PDF
  • Digital Storyboard PDF
  • Giclee Background Art Print Signed by Yuasa
