Updates on the upcoming anime adaptation of Compile Heart and Idea Factory’s Hyperdimension Neptunia (超次元ゲイム ネプテューヌ the Animation) series of JRPGs have been few and far apart.
Back in October we learned from Rie Tanaka, who plays the lead heroine Neptune in the JRPG series, that the anime adaptation would indeed be a full season on TV as opposed to an original video animation (OVA), and since then there’s been nary a whisper on Hyperdimension Neptunia the Animation — until now.
An official website for the anime series has just went live today, and it reveals that the show will air as part of the Summer 2013 anime season on Japanese TV, and that it’s being worked on by the legendary studio David Production (founded by former Gonzo president and producer Kōji Kajita and producer Taito Okiura back in 2007), whose credits include the currently-airing JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Inu X Boku SS.
Hyperdimension Neptunia is set in a fictional universe known as Gamesindustri that’s split into four regions – Lastation (a parody on Sony’s PlayStation), Leanbox (Xbox), Lowee (Wii), and Planeptune (Sega Saturn) – and the storylines in the original JRPGs are based loosely on real-world gaming events, like Sega’s exit from the hardware business and Nintendo’s war against the R4 flash cart.
Although the voice cast for the anime has yet to be announced, it will likely follow that of the games’, which include: Rie Tanaka (Maria from Hayate no Gotoku) as Neptune or Purple Heart (the goddess of Sega-inspired country Planeptune), Asami Imai (Steins;Gate‘s Kurisu Makise, [email protected]‘s Chihaya Kisaragi) as Noire or Black Heart (Sony-inspired Lastation), and Eri Kitamura (Lollipop Chainsaw) as Uni (the PlayStation Portable, personified).
