For many years, the Shin Megami Tensei RPG series has been overshadowed by its own spin-off, the Persona series. Now, the main line MegaTen is coming back with a vengeance, as you can see from the newest trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV.

The upcoming 3DS title includes many features from the past games, such as fighting demons, recruiting them to fight for you, and combining them to form stronger demons. Of course, there’s also a brand new story set in a country resembling feudal Japan, where teens on the verge of adulthood are given the title of “samurai”, a magic gauntlet, and the responsibility of protecting the country from demons.

It’s not the traditional samurai fare, but it’s intense nonetheless, expanding from the country of Mikado to a monster-ridden version of modern Tokyo. Take a look for yourself with the five-minute trailer below.

The striking character designs are done by Masayuki Doi, and the monster designs by Kazuma Kaneko, both of whom have worked on the past MegaTen and Persona games. Plus, renowned outside artists have contributed their own monster designs, like Yasushi Nirasawa, who designed monsters for the Kamen Rider franchise as well as the demon king Asmodeus from the trailer.

Those of you who are eager to do some demon-hunting just have to wait until May 23.
