According to the movie’s official website, the cast for Hayao Miyazaki’s new movie Kaze ga Tachinu (The Wind Rises) has been revealed.Taking on the main character Jiro Horikoshi, the historic designer of the World War II Zero fighter, will be none other than Hideaki Anno. If the name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, then know that you can thank Mr. Hideaki for Evangelion. All of Evangelion. This also isn’t the first time Hideaki and Miyazaki have worked together – in fact, Hideaki’s first recognized work came from his part in the animation of Miyazaki’s beloved movie Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Here he is speaking with the Ghibli genius himself.
Jiro’s mother will be voiced by the beautiful Keiko Takeshita, who also has a relationship with Ghibli that goes back quite a bit. Keiko voiced Hana Matsuzaki in From Up on Poppy Hill, and Sadako from Arietty.
The official-looking Honjo will be voiced by Hidetoshi Nishijima. Hidetoshi recently starred in the live-action adaptation of the manga Freesia. Please feel free to call me crazy, but isn’t there a resemblance here as well?
The strong-willed Horikoshi Kayo will have the talented Mirai Shida as her voice. Mirai’s more prominent roles include Arietty, not to mention the many movies she’s starred in and the awards she has won.
Jun Kunimura, a man best known for being every gangster in every Japanese movie ever, will play Hattori, who is probably a gangster, too. Okay, maybe not, but still. Can’t you see the love of mafia that mutually runs through their veins?!
Masahiko Nishimura (Radio no Jikan, Princess Mononoke’s Kohroku) voices Kurokawa, an apparently disgruntled and disagreeable man. I feel like a different picture of Masahiko should have been chosen, because it seems that Kurokawa is not amused by Masahiko’s cheerful smile.
