After two successful live-action adaptations starring Kenichi Matsuyama in 2011 as well as a successful anime adaptation in 2004 by Gonzo, the original manga will have its final curtain call in the next issue of Young Jump. The last issue will be in Young Jump #29 to be released June 20.
The manga has been running for 13 years. It made its debut on July 2000 in Shueisha’s Young Jump magazine. There are currently 36 volumes of the manga published and it has sold almost 20 million units so far. The manga is written by Oku Hiroya. As mentioned earlier, there were two live-action adaptations; Gantz in January 2011 and its sequel, Gantz: Perfect Answer in April later that year. Meanwhile, the original anime adaptation ran for 13 episodes in 2004 and had a sequel, Gantz: Second Stage.
The manga follows high school students Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato. Both died after getting hit by a train. Soon, both of them get transported into a room with others and a large black sphere known as “Gantz”. Soon, both of them get caught up in a vicious and violent game. The manga, the live-action adaptation and the anime were notorious for the amount of blood, gore and violence, however was still very popular among its fans.
