Japan is probably one of the most peaceful countries on Earth, in fact, they have this policy of non-aggression which was established after their defeat during World War II. However, that does not mean that they can’t protect themselves from threats from other countries, especially from that certain rogue state run by Kim Jong Un who hurl ballistic missiles toward them every now and then. That is why they have the Self Defence Force (自衛隊 Jieitai).
Now, the SDF have pumped up their recruitment drive by using the popularity of anime and manga. According to an official Self Defence Force twitter account, they have gotten the help of the renowned anime character designer and artist Humikane Shimada to gather more recruits to defend their beloved Land of the Rising Sun. The artist made several posters for the SDF and have been distributed around Okayama Prefecture. (For more news about Japanese sub-culture here on SGCafe, click here)
Here’s one taken from a certain book store in the city of Okayama
Humikane Shimada is the artist behind the character designs of several military-related anime like Girls Und Panzer and Strike Witches. He also provided character and armor designs for Busuo Shinki as well as the character designs and mecha designs for Sky Girls. He himself is from Okayama Prefecture so it’s not surprising that he was the one chosen for this SDF recruitment drive in Okayama.
This however isn’t the first time the Self Defence Force did a collaboration with Girls Und Panzer. The Japanese Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF) also released an informational DVD in collaboration with the anime.
