During the late 90’s and early 2000’s, Pokemon took the world by storm and their trading card game did just about the same thing. As a kid growing up, I remembered buying a starter deck which is still with me today. In fact, even as an adult, I still collect them.
For trading card collectors, one card seems to stand above all others, the Pokemon Illustrator. This ultra rare card has never even had an English version with only a total of six, I repeat, 6 copies printed and only 5 circulated into the market. Now, this ultra rare Pokemon trading card is being auctioned off in ebay and the opening bid is a measly US$100,000.00.
Pokemon Illustrator was released as a promo card and it was given to the winners of the Pokemon card game illustration contest. It was released back in 1997 and it is illustrated by Atsuko Nishida.
According to seller smpratte, this is the “Holy Grail” of Pokemon trading cards. This holographic card is in mint condition and is encased by a trading card protector case. Also according to the seller, this card has already been graded and is the first graded version of the card to be sold off ever. As mentioned earlier, the starting bid is just US$100,000 so the price may go higher in the later stages of the auction.
Although the Pokemon Illustrator card is classified as a Trainer, the card itself doesn’t actually possess any game effects. Here’s what the description of the card says:
We hereby acknowledge that your illustration is a winning entry in the Pokemon Card Game Illustration Contest. Thus, we acknowledge that you are an official Pokemon Card illustrator, and hereby bestow you honour.”
