Gintama: The Final Movie (also known as Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya) opens exclusively at Cathay Cineplexes tomorrow, October 17, here in Singapore.

If you’ve been meaning to be amongst the first to catch the movie here in Singapore, well, drop what you’re doing now and head over to the online tickets reservation page over at Cathay Cineplexes’ website to book your tickets now — hurry, before all the best seats are gone!

Before you do though, I’d just like to take a moment to set things straight: despite its title, Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya is probably not the actual final chapter in the Gintama anime series. Or at least, we hope so.

It probably isn’t. We’re not sure – they haven’t actually announced a sequel to it yet. Or a continuation in the form of a new TV anime season, or an original video animation release.

But given that the movie sold over one million tickets at the box office in Japan, something tells us that this won’t be the last time we’ll be seeing freelance samurai Gintoki Sakata and his pals, Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura, fight aliens and perform random (hilarious) odd jobs in animated form.

There’s actually very little connection between the anime series and Gintama: The Final Movie, so you don’t really need to be up-to-date with your Gintama anime knowledge to enjoy this – in fact, the plot of the whole thing may not even be canon.

Set in an parallel universe five years into the future of Gintama’s original world, in this movie series protagonist Gintoki will face off against a mysterious group of sorcerors known as the Enmi, as well as alternate versions of his former comrades, Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura.

Opens: 17 Oct 2013
Rating: TBA
Runtime: 110 mins
Language: Japanese (English & Chinese subtitles)
Voice Cast: Tomokazu Sugita as Gintoki, Rie Kugimiya as Kagura, Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi, Susumu Chiba, Kazuya Nakai, Kenichi Suzumura, Akira Ishida, Koichi Yamadera

The plot places Gintoki Sakata several years in the future where Edo has been destroyed. In the city, Gintoki meets older versions of his comrades, Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura. Gintoki is mainly opposed by a group of sorcerers known as Enmi. Across his journey Gintoki is also set to encounter his past self from the war, White Devil, as an enemy.
