Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most moe of them all? According to the International Saimoe League, this year the most moe (moe-est?) anime character of them all is OreImo‘s resident child of darkness, Kuroneko.
The League is actually a tournament in which anime characters go head to head with each other and the winner will be decided through public vote, in other words, it is a popularity contest held in a knock-out tournament format.
The International Saimoe League started in 2008 and already fielded six champions, namely 2008’sFate Testarossa (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha), 2009’s Hinagiku Katsura (Hayate the Combat Butler), 2010’s Mio Akiyama (K-On!), 2011’s Mikoto Misaka (A Certain series), 2012’s Kanade Tachibana (Angel Beats) and this year’s winner, Kuroneko from OreImo.
The tournament started last January and consisted of nine rounds: the nomination period, the preliminaries, the aquamarine round, amethyst round, ruby round, emerald round, topaz round, the 1st elimination round and the final stage where Kuroneko defeated all who stood against her.
During the final tournament, she first took care of Haganai‘s Sena by winning 69% of the votes before beating K-On!’s Azusa Nakano for 60% of the votes. She then beat Kore wa Zombie desu ka?‘s Eucliwood Hellscythe for 59% of the votes before finally beating the defending champion Kanade Tachibana in the finals.
The voting was open to everyone so no matter where in the world you are, as long as you have an internet connection, you can vote. The International Saimoe League is different from Anime Saimoe as it is not restricted to Japan alone.
