On Atlus’s Persona announcement livestream, currently being broadcast on Nico Video, the JRPG maker has announced Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth for the Nintendo 3DS.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (PQ) is a brand new JRPG that reunites the main cast of Persona 3 and Persona 4 as they investigate an urban legend: a clock tower that’s said to be the 7th mysterious wonder of Yasogami High School. Rumour has it that when the clock tower chimes, whomever tries to listen to it till the very end, will be found murdered.

This urban legend, apparently, has something to do with shadows and a labyrinth that reveals itself at the location of the clown tower when the clock strikes 12 midnight. And it is up to two teams of Persona users — the cast of Persona 3 and Persona 4, respectively — to investigate the mysterious secrets that lay beneath the surface here.

Of course, if you’re an advent fan of the Persona series, you might have realised by now that the story in Persona Q is likely to be non-canon — the events in Persona 4 and Persona 4 Arena are set a few years after that of Persona 3, yet the P3 characters in PQ do not look as old as they do in Persona 4 Arena.

In Persona Q, a mysterious force has twisted the fabrics of time and space, throwing all of the characters from Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden into a parallel dimension where all of the events in this game occur.

The game features a super-deformed character art style — even with the 2D illustrations that accompany the 3D character models — as opposed to the graphical style used for Persona 3 and Persona 4.

Interestingly, Persona Q will have two main leads: the protagonists from Persona 3 (male only) and Persona 4 respectively.

Depending on which lead character you pick to play as, the amount of interactions you’ll have with the Persona 3 and Persona 4 cast will vary. The P3 protagonist will get more face time with the P3 investigation team, while the P4 lead will naturally spend more time with the investigation team from his game.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth is slated for release on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on June 5, 2014.
