Death Note is one of the most celebrated manga series in history and that very classic piece of Japanese manga is getting adapted into a stage musical for the first time in history.

The hit manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata has so far had an anime and three live-action movie adaptations but never a stage musical (well, few anime series do). This new musical will not only be shown in Japan but also South Korea.

Big name American composer Frank Wildhorn who has composed music for the likes of Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole will be providing the musical’s score. Wildhorn has written scores for various stage musicals like Carmen, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Civil War and Jekyll and Hyde. Jack Murphy who has worked alongside Frank Wildhorn in Carmen, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Civil War will be providing the lyrics. The script will be provided by Ivan Menchell who wrote the script for Bonnie and Clyde.

The musical will be directed by Japanese director Tamiya Kuriyama. The director is a recipient of the Japanese government’s purple ribbon medal. No announcements for the musical’s cast members have been made so far.

The musical is set to be played in the Nissay Theater in Tokyo on April 2015. The show will then head over to South Korea where it will be held in Seoul’s LG Art Center from July-August 2015.
