The 2.5D musical genre which turns popular 2D games into live action 3D musicals have become the latest trend in Japan’s stage musical scene.

Two examples which have gotten much attention lately are Persona 3: Weird Masquerade and Amnesia the Musical, both of which are based on 2D games and both are currently being played in their respective stage theaters.

Persona 3: Weird Masquerade stars voice actors Shouta Aoi (Ai Mikaze from UtaPri) and Kana Asumi (Nyaruko from Haiyore! Nyaruko-san! and Yuu Kotari/ Strength from Black Rock Shooter). They play alternating roles as the nameless male and female protagonists of the musical. The musical is currently being played at the Theater G Rosso in Tokyo. The shows started last January 8, 2014 with today, January 12, 2014 being the last day.

Amnesia the musical meanwhile is based on the popular Otome Game and stars Ryo Kobayashi as Kent, Yuki Izawa as Toma, Ryuko Isogai as Ukyo, Ryo Hatakeyama as Ikki, and Goro Kurihara as Shin. The shows started last January 9, 2014 and will last until January 19,2014 at the Hakuhinkan theater.

It can be said that these 2.5D stage musicals are an attempt to create a form of live entertainment where the idea is out of the ordinary like Persona 3: Weird Masquerade’s alternating leads and Amnesia’s multi-branch story which follows the visual novel closely. It has been on the rise in recent years with plays like 2009’s Sengoku no Basara the Musical and the Hakuoki musical titled Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan from 2012.
