The past year has definitely brought us plenty of great anime movies from Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises (Kaze no Tachinu) to an epic face-off between two wily anime legends in Lupin III vs. Detective Conan.

But among all of them, what exactly is 2013’s most interesting anime movie? has recently asked people which anime movie from 2013 did they think was the best. With a total of 503 valid botes, here are the results:

11/10: Patema Inverted (12 votes)

11/10: A Certain Magical Index Movie: The Miracle of Endymion (12 votes)

9: Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin (13 votes)

8/7: Lupin III vs. Detective Conan (16 votes)

8/7: Code Geass: Akito the Exiled chapter 2 (16 votes)

6: Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home (18 votes)

5: The Wind Rises/ Kaze no Tachinu (26 votes)

4: The Garden of Words/ Kotonoha no Niwa (30 votes)

3: Dokidoki! PreCure the Movie: Mana’s Getting Married!!? (43 votes)

2: Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya (100 votes)

1: Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Rebellion Story (103 votes)

Taking the #1 and #2 spots by blowing away the rest of the competition are Madoka Magica and Gintama who were definitely two of the movies to beat the past year.

Fans have been saying that the Gintama movie was the best Gintama movie to date while the Madoka Magica movie received high critical acclaim as well as a certified box office success.

The Garden of Words and Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home meanwhile surprised a lot of people by placing higher than fan favorites Code Geass: Akito the Exiled and A Certain Magical Index the movie. Both movies haven’t had much hype in them compared to the latter two but have overcome the other favorites through beautiful visuals and great stories.

One of the anime movies which sadly did not make it to the top 10 was the very expensive CGI remake of Space Captain Harlock. The movie was said to be Toei Animation’s most expensive movie but unfortunately received mixed reviews from many critics.
