Shogakukan‘s classic shoujo manga series, Asari-chan has recently reached its 100th volume milestone, and with that, the comedy series written by the female manga duo known as Mayumi Muroyama has taken the world record for “Most volumes published by a duo of authors for a single comic book series (female)”
Shogakukan announced the milestone accomplishment in their official website and released a comment from Mayumi Muroyama. The duo stated that since their manga has gone on for a long while now, one fan commented that they might win a world record. They did not believe this initially, however, they said they are very happy about it, but also a bit “embarrassed”. They even released a special illustration of themselves on this achievement and thanked the fans for all the support.
Because of this recent milestone, the manga will also be featured in the Japanese version of the Guinness Book of World Records.
Asari-chan was first serialized in 1978 and it also received a 54-episode anime adaptation from 1982 – 1983. The manga gas also won several other accolades such as the Grand Award during this year’s Japan Cartoonists Association Awards and the Best Children’s Manga Award during the 30th Shogakukan Manga Awards back in 1985.
The series follows Asari-chan, a 4th Grade elementary school student who is a little bit of a slow thinker and often does not get along with her family. The manga has been serialized in many Shogakukan magazines such as CoroCoro Comic, Ciao, and many others.
