There have been plenty of deaths throughout anime, and many of them have been very unforgettable. Most made us cry (or in some cases, cheer), while many have also made us love the departed characters even more. In this week’s latest rankings by anime character database, Charapedia, they have ranked the 20 most impressive deaths in anime.
With 10,000 votes, 53.7% of whom were men while 46.3% were women, the poll featured over 150 different anime characters, however, only the Top 20 were announced. The poll also included resurrected characters as this one only focused on the characters’ deaths and not the aftermath. Here are Charapedia’s Top 20 most impressive deaths in anime:
20) Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad)
19) Nagisa Kaworu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
18) Souji Okita (Hakuouki)
17) Kamotarou Itou (Gintama)
16) Maes Hughes (Full Metal Alchemist)
15) Son Goku (Dragon Ball Z)
14) Jiraiya (Naruto)
13) Lockon Stratos/ Neil Dylandy (Gundam 00)
12) Hinata Hyuuga (Naruto)
11) Itachi Uchiha (Naruto)
10) Kamina (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
9) Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z)
8) Makoto Itou (School Days)
7) Light Yagami (Death Note)
6) Caesar A. Zeppeli (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure)
5) Edward Newgate/ White Beard (One Piece)
4) Raoh (Fist of the North Star)
3) Mami Tomoe (Madoka Magica)
2) Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2)
1) Portgas D. Ace (One Piece)
Well there you have it, looks like the Death of Ace in One Piece has been regarded as fans as the most impressive death in all of anime, and it wasn’t just a truly heroic death, it also brought many fans into tears. Lelouch’s self-sacrifice of a death was also impressive because his death as a “dictator” was a necessary evil to promote peace in the world. As for the #3 rank, [Insert Mami’s Head Jokes Here].
A complete opposite to most of the deaths in this list has come in at #7, which is of course the death of School Days protagonist, Makoto Itou, whose demise did not induce tears among the fans, but cheers.
And as for the DBZ deaths, we have no idea which of Goku’s or Vegeta’s many deaths this list is actually talking about. And speaking of resurrected characters, Hinata also impresses after her death at the hands of Pain. As we all know, she gets better, a whole lot better.
Also listed but did not make the Top 20 are L (Death Note), Shirley (Code Geass), Yumi Ogura (Another), Misuzu Kamio (AIR), Sachi (Sword Art Online), Ramba Ral (Mobile Suit Gundam), Yamcha (Dragon Ball), Krillin (of course!) (Dragon Ball), Carla Yeager (Attack on Titan), Petra Ral (Attack on Titan), Taguro (Yu Yu Hakusho), and a whole lot of Akame Ga Kill and Black Bullet characters. Seriously, it was really surprising that none of the characters from those two death-filled series have made it to the top 20. [Insert
