After months of rumors, French game developer, Ubisoft, has now officially confirmed that they are finally opening a new studio in the Philippines. This would be Ubisoft’s 30th studio, and the very first major gaming studio to open in the country.

Best known for their Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft is opening their new studio in Santa Rosa, Laguna, with Ubisoft Singapore’s Chip Go acting as the studio’s manager, and will be under Oliver de Rotalier, who is also in charge of overseeing Ubisoft’s studios in Chengdu, China, and Singapore.

de Rotalier has said that they will be working with one of the Philippines’ most prestigious universities, the De LaSalle University in Manila, to set up a training program. He said that “As we did in Singapore, we want to expose people to major triple-A franchise,” and he added that “We will work with a local university to grow taken the industry needs.” He also said that he wants to develop the next generation of game developers in the Philippines, “We’ll be crafting the right curriculum, helping students and projects, to quickly grown the next generation of game developers — fits market in Philippines, and that’s why we consider contributing to the ecosystem as important.”

Ubisoft Philippines is considered an outgrowth of their Ubisoft Singapore studio, which has plenty of Filipino employees who have developed good relationships with de Rotalier. During the recent 2016 Game Developers Conference, de Rotalier has told reporters that his Singapore studio has developed Ocean Tech, which helped bring about the naval warfare gameplay in Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The Singapore studio started out with ony 22 people, but now has more than 320 employees.

de Rotalier has also said that his employees will be getting a “competitive salary,” and hopes that Ubisoft Philippines will soon become as big as Ubisoft Singapore. When talking about the choice of area and why he chose Santa Rosa over the capital, Manila, he said that “Santa Rosa’s very accessible, and more important, if go to Santa Rosa, it offers unique quality of life. As growing studio, the quality of life is important,It’s easy, and it’s also a guarantee for those settle there [that they’re] 5-10 minutes from work, have a good balance in life. That was a big focus for us, and we’re happy to provide that.”
