Since 2012, the life-size statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam has stood guard over Odaiba’s Diver City Tokyo mall. However, the 18-meter behemoth was finally taken down earlier this week, and several heartbreaking photos of its dismantling have surfaced.

Twitter user, @Enchi151, also posted some of the life-size statue’s final moments, including the final time it moved its head and held its final lights show.

He also posted a video of some construction workers dismantling the iconic Odaiba statue.

And the Gundam finally lost its head…

But the RX-78-2 Gundam without its head and left arm invokes a very powerful image for Gundam fans. (image via @koga_tvproducer)

It reminds them of the original 1979 anime’s climax, where Char Aznable’s Zeong manages to destroy the Gundam’s head and left arm, before Amuro manages to shoot the Zeong’s head in an iconic scene known as “The Last Shooting”.

This is a rather fitting sendoff top an iconic mecha, don’t you think? But don’t worry folks, it would get its replacement soon!
