Makoto Shinkai’s your name. is undoubtedly one of Japan’s biggest movie hits when it comes to animation. The story of city boy Taki and country girl Mitsuha has wowed audiences with its beautiful story and amazing animation. However, in an interview, Shinkai, together with producer Genki Kawamura, revealed that their relationship in the movie is very different from the one from the original script.

In the final product, AKA the movie itself, Taki and Mitsuha never even met before, but in the original script, Taki and Mitsuha already met, with Mitsuha already having a one-sided crush. They were still gonna swap bodies in the original script, though thankfully, Shinkai and Kawamura decided to change a few things.

“I wanted to make a film where the relationship between the characters’ changes through the process of them repeatedly switching bodies,” Shinkai says in the interview. “So in the beginning, I thought it’d be best for one of them to feel a one-sided attraction, and I gave that role to Mitsuha.”

But when Kawamura found out about this, he pointed something out to Shinkai. “He told me, ‘You know, if the female lead has a guy she’s into from the very start of the movie, the audience will lose interest.’” Shinkai said. Kawamura then added that “Mitsuha is a Shinto shrine maiden, and she makes kuchikamizake [a traditional sake made by shrine maidens chewing and spitting out rice]. So I thought that depicting her as a sort of Virgin Mary-like person would be better. That’s a technique that’s been around since the days of the Bible, and Hayao Miyazaki did the same thing. Nausicaa and Sheeta aren’t into any other guys [when their stories begin].”

But Shinkai didn’t want to scrap that whole one-sided love concept in the film. This of course lead to the character of Miki Okudera, who Taki has a one-sided crush on at the start of the movie.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the fans REALLY loved that new revised script. your name. even made BILLIONS of yen with it. But that really makes one wonder what might have been if Shinkai decided not to do those revisions, right?
