Looks like a few characters from Yuri!! on Ice have wandered into the world of Steven Universe. It seems that Yuri Katsuki, Viktor, Yuri Plisetsky, and Otabek Altin were all spotted attending a local Renaissance Faire in Beach City, which of course is the setting of Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe.

The four appeared on the 4th issue of the Steven Universe comic by author Melanie Gillman and illustrator Katy Farina. Anime News Network reached out to Farina, and asked her about the obvious reference/ shout out to the hit figure skating anime.

“I just like YoI – the characters are great! Sometimes drawing backgrounds isn’t the most compelling, so I tend to add cameos. It makes it fun for me to draw, and it’s a cute little Easter egg for the people reading,” Farina said.

She also added:

“When it was airing I was feeling so discouraged and unmotivated. Watching Yūri work hard and learn to find confidence in himself inspired me to do the same. I think a lot of people can relate to that,” she shared. “Victor and Yuuri’s relationship also – watching that develop and the nuance of their dynamic is really compelling. Yuuri is definitely my fave though! Whenever I’m feeling like I can’t do something I think back to the series and his journey.”

The sereis is known among anime fans for a lot of Japanese animation references, like ones for Sailor Moon, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Evangelion, among others. Studio Trigger’s Takafumi Hori even worked on its “Mindful Education” episode.
