During the D23 event by Disney, Square Enix revealed that Toy Story will be the latest world to be added to Kingdom Hearts III. And during the event, Kingdom Hearts III director, Tetsuya Nomura sat down with IGN for an interview. There, he revealed that Sora may not be the only playable character in the game.

Nomura only teased that possibility, and didn’t who it will be, but it got fans’ attention none the less. Here’s what he said:

“So it would be tough to introduce many, multiple playable characters, but there is an intention of adding a playable character aside from Sora. Unfortunately we’re not able to disclose who it is yet, but there will be [another playable character].”

Now, this isn’t entirely new for the Kingdom Hearts franchise, as the game did feature multiple playable characters before. In Kingdom Hearts II, players actually had to start out by playing Roxas, Sora’s Nobody, before moving on to play Sora himself. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep meanwhile featured three Keyblade users, while Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories players could also play as Riku in the second campaign.

Meanwhile, Nomura also discussed why Kingdom Hearts 3 features a party system that allows for more than two additional members to fight alongside Sora.  This means that players can no longer think about which party members to bring with them in battle. This is part of their decision to do away with the game’s D-Link system. According to Nomura:

“D-Link, that has been done away with. It was actually a compromise in a previous iteration because we were not able to display multiple characters on that platform in that game, We’re able to depict multiple characters. Up to five people can join, even more, multiple characters can join your party.”

This may be a reference to the Toy Story world, where the party could include Woody and Buzz Lightyear, along with Sora, Goofy, and Donald.

Nomura also talked to IGN about a possible Kingdom Hearts III release for the Nintendo Switch. In another interview, he told IGN that:

“The Nintendo Switch is definitely a very interesting piece of hardware, but if we lightly say, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll be on the Nintendo Switch,’ I’m sure people will come back and say, ‘But what about the PS4 and Xbox One? We want them out first. Don’t focus on other platforms,’ So for now, we want to focus on what platforms we’ve already announced we’re going to be releasing Kingdom Hearts 3 on. And so after, perhaps, maybe we can start thinking about other possibilities.”

This Disney and Square Enix collaboration game will be released for both Xbox ONE and PlayStation 4 starting 2018.
