Junji Ito may just be Japan’s greatest horror mangaka, and now, a new anime will be adapting his works! Now, the official Junji Ito Collection TV anime website has revealed a spooky new key visual. It features some of the Japanese horror legend’s characters from some of his most frightening stories. This includes Fuchi (“Fashion Model”), Tohru Oshikiri (“Oshikiri Idan”), Tomie (Tomie series), Souichi (“Souichi” series), Handsome Man at the Crossroads (“Shibito no Koiwazurai”), and Yuuko (“Namekuji Shoujo”).
The anime itself will be adapting the 11 volumes from the bestselling Junji Ito Masterpiece Collection. However, the site didn’t reveal which stories will be appearing in the anime, and even noted that the stories featured in the new visual(s) may or may not be featured. This is all to maximize the surprise factor for viewers and not give anything away. In typical Junji Ito fashion, even the anime adaptation remains a mystery…
As for when the anime will actually premiere, the official website has confirmed that it will be on January 7, 2018. Shinobu Tagashira will be both directing this new anime, as well as handling the character designs over at Studio DEEN.
As for the horror master himself, he said that he’s happy that his own horror manga are getting animated. The horror mangaka has had plenty of other adaptations through various media. His GYO manga was adapted into an OVA, while his Uzumaki and Tomie manga have live-action adaptations.
