2017 marked the 100th anniversary of Japanese animation, and they year featured plenty of celebrations including NHK’s 100 Best Anime of all time poll, as well as the Anime x Stamps exhibition right here in Singapore. Now, the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) has released a brand new video montage which shows the history of Japanese animation. However, fans have noticed that the works from one very influential animation studio is missing…
The video featured classics like Astroboy, Tetsujin, Kimba the White Lion, Cyborg 009, Speed Racer, and many more. It also has a lot of anime that the younger generations might know, as well as recent anime. And it didn’t just feature TV anime, but films as well, as it also featured several Makoto Shinkai Works, as well as Sword Art Online Ordinal Scale. This made fans scratch their heads a bit more as to the absence of Studio Ghibli works, as they are very successful internationally. And while fans discussed the reason for the missing Ghibli scenes in the video, many fans have theorized that this may all be because of licencing issues.
The video also includes Anime 100’s theme song “Tsubasa wo Motsu Mono ~Not an angel Just a dreamer~” (Those With Wings: Not an Angel, Just a Dreamer) by 23 artistes, including i☆Ris, Azumi Inoue, the Wake Up, Girls!, Maaya Uchida, Akira Kushida, GRANRODEO, Isao Sasaki, Hiro Shimono, JAM Project, Konomi Suzuki, Kenichi Suzumura, Ayana Taketatsu, Minori Chihara, TRUE, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Shoko Nakagawa, Wataru Hatano, Mitsuko Horie, Minami, Ichiro Mizuki, Suzuko Mimori, May’n, and Chihiro Yonekura.
AJA will then end the year with a 5-hour TV special on NHK. During the program, they will reveal the results of the most popular anime character poll, as well as discuss the evolution of anime through these 100 years.
