Yes, we already know that Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, will be voicing Pikachu for the live-action Detective Pikachu movie. Yes, we know that it will feature CGI motion capture Pokemon, including Pikachu himself. But now, the staff and crew have already started filming in London, and several on-set have surfaced. These images include the Ryme City Police Department, several police cars, and of course, blue-clad motion capture actors. Yes folks, if you see men on blue, they will be the Pokemon in the finished product.

If you look at PokeJungle’s tweet, it features an obvious Loudred and Treecko cut-out. These cut-outs represent what the blue-clad motion capture actors will be when they add the CGI effects. As for Ryme City, it seems they chose London as the stand-in for it, and it seems very fitting as Detective Pikachu does have a Sherlock Holmes theme. Ryme City also serves as the setting for the original 3DS game as well.

The movie will premiere on May 10, 2019, and will star Ryan Reynolds. It will also star Justice Smith and Katherine Newton. The Hollywood Reporter describes the movie’s story as:

The story is kicked into gear when Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.

They also reported that the movie “is said to be motion capture in nature.” They also added “Many details of the project are being kept off the grid, including the casting, which has been underway under the radar by the usually secretive Legendary.”

Universal Pictures is handling distribution of the live-action film outside Japan, while Toho will handle distribution in Japan. More details about the movie will be announced in the days to come.
