It’s finally 2018, so Happy New Year everyone! And with the new year, we are taking a look at some of last year’s best anime. We’ve carefully looked at our favorite anime last year, and discussed what we think are the best of the best. And after much argument, debates, and a fist fight, we finally decided our Top 10 for last year!
The decision was certainly a difficult one, as 2017 featured plenty of great anime. As for the list itself, we only picked TV anime, so we’re not counting the anime movies and OVAs. We also didn’t count long-running anime which have started a few years ago, so no One Piece and Dragon Ball Super. And without further ado, here are our picks:
10 – Kemono Friends
Let’s face it, Kemono Friends really came out of nowhere. It went from an obscure anime which many people dropped after the first episode to become arguably the most talked-about anime of 2017. And since this is a list for 2017, the anime also made a ton of news, from Grape-kun the penguin to its director controversy. Clearly, 2017 was the year of Kemono Friends. Sure, its animation wasn’t that good, and its first few episodes weren’t that great, but the middle and later episodes made the anime such a compelling watch. Let’s just say that Episode 4 changed everything for the anime, and it became the season’s sleeper hit, which NOBODY saw coming! Yes folks, the anime’s story was actually good, and it wasn’t just an anime which the internet grew fond of, and that’s why it’s in our list!
9 – Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Flat
We really loved the first season, and it’s safe to say that the second season didn’t disappoint. Much like the first anime, it still made a ton of fun on the various harem anime tropes, and yes, the “normal” and “boring” girl stood out.
8 – My Hero Academia Second Season
While the first season set the bar for new shounen anime, the second season featured a lot more action and cemented its legacy as one of the best this year. ‘nuf said.
7 – Fate/Apocrypha
If you ignore Fate/Apocrypha’s many animation quality problems, the anime is a great watch. It’s a nice addition to the already-strong Fate franchise in general, and features a unique new type of Holy Grail War. Oh, and it also has Astolfo… wait… he’s a dude?!
6 – Land of the Lustrous
The anime shows how to use 3D animation properly. Add in beautiful visuals, a great story, and lovable characters, the anime is certainly a strong contender for one of last year’s best.
