The new Spring 2018 anime season is certainly a very old school one. With Full Metal Panic IV, an Ashita no Joe spin-off, Gegege no Kitarou, and even a new Gundam and Captain Tsubasa anime, this new season pretty much hits a ton of nostalgia points. And for this latest SGCafe list, we’re taking a look at 10 anime titles to look forward to for Spring 2018. However, we’re only listing the returning anime, spin-offs, and reboots because we have a separate list for the new titles. And without further ado, here’re our 13 picks:
My Hero Academia 3rd Season
It’s the third season of My Hero Academia, do we even need to state why we’re excited to watch this one?!
The dark untold story of Steins;Gate that leads with the eccentric mad scientist Okabe, struggling to recover from a failed attempt at rescuing Kurisu. He decides to give up and abandons his lively scientist alter ego, in pursuit to forget the past. When all seems to be normal, he is seemingly pulled back into the past by meeting an acquaintance of Kurisu, who tells him that they have begun testing a device that stores the memory of a human and creates a simulation of them with their characteristics and personalities. Okabe begins testing and finds out that the simulation of Kurisu has brought back anguish and some new unexpected tragedies.
Zero is a side story that explores events from the Beta Attractor Field’s future that contribute in making the end of the original story possible.
Two years have passed since the CCG’s raid on Anteiku. Although the atmosphere in Tokyo has changed drastically due to the increased influence of the CCG, ghouls continue to pose a problem as they have begun taking caution, especially the terrorist organization Aogiri Tree, who acknowledge the CCG’s growing threat to their existence.
The creation of a special team, known as the Quinx Squad, may provide the CCG with the push they need to exterminate Tokyo’s unwanted residents. As humans who have undergone surgery in order to make use of the special abilities of ghouls, they participate in operations to eradicate the dangerous creatures. The leader of this group, Haise Sasaki, is a half-ghoul, half-human who has been trained by famed special class investigator, Kishou Arima. However, there’s more to this young man than meets the eye, as unknown memories claw at his mind, slowly reminding him of the person he used to be.
And trust us, Kaneki will be there from the very beginning…
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma Third Plate part 2
The last episode of Shokugeki no Soma Third Plate certainly left all of us hanging. Thankfully, Part 2 will finally premiere next season and give us our fix of weekly food porn. And yes, please don’t watch this one on an empty stomach.
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online
Karen Kohiruimaki always felt out of place in the real world. Due to her extreme height, she found it hard to make friends with other girls her age. Everything changes when she’s introduced to VR and Gun Gale Online. In GGO, Karen is free to play the cute, chibi avatar of her dreams! Can Karen find friendship in this bullet-ridden MMO…?
An SAO anime without Kirito or Asuna? Well, I guess a lot of people would like that, while some people wont. Set in the same world of Sword Art Online and Accel World, this one would all be about Guns, Team Work, and more Guns. ‘Murica!
High School DXD HERO
Issei and his harem are about to take on the dreaded Hero Faction which seeks to destroy the new alliance between the angels, demons, and fallen angels. Oh who am I kidding? You guys are here for the bouncy stuff Issei likes to shout about! But still, this anime has a lot of plot, that’s for sure.
Persona 5 the Animation
This one finally adapts the bestselling video game. We’ve loved the game, and are certainly looking forward for the anime adaptation.
JD (Junk Dog) participates in fixed boxing matches in an underground ring in order to live. Today, he enters the ring again, but he encounters a certain person. JD wants to take on a challenge that risks everything.
This anime is actually a spin-off of Ashita no Joe, and it celebrates the original manga’s 50th anniversary. So far, the anime looks great, and it looks like TMS Entertainment is pulling out all the stops for this anime to live up to the hype.
Full Metal Panic IV: Invisible Victory
We’ve waited over 10 years for this anime. Nuf said.
Captain Tsubasa is the passionate story of an elementary school student whose thoughts and dreams revolve almost entirely around the love of soccer. 11-year-old Tsubasa Oozora started playing football at a very young age, and while it was mostly just a recreational sport for his friends, for him, it developed into something of an obsession.
In order to pursue his dream to the best of his elementary school abilities, Tsubasa moves with his mother to Nankatsu city, which is well-known for its excellent elementary school soccer teams. But although he was easily the best in his old town, Nankatsu has a lot more competition, and he will need all of his skill and talent in order to stand out from this new crowd.
He encounters not only rivals, but also new friends like the pretty girl Sanae Nakazawa and the talented goalkeeper, Genzo Wakabayashi, who shares the same passion as Tsubasa, and will prove to be a treasured friend in helping him push towards his dreams. Representing Japan in the FIFA World Cup is Tsubasa’s ultimate dream, but it will take a lot more than talent to reach it.
When we said that this season is really old school, we’re not really kidding. Not only are we getting a new Captain Tsubasa anime and an Ashita no Joe spin-off, there’s also…
The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These – Kaikou
The Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Now that’s old school. But not as old school as this next pick, which started out as a black and white TV classic.
Gegege no Kitaro
From the late great mangaka, Shigeru Mizuki, Gegege no Kitaro is an iconic title in Japan. Let’s just say that there’s a good reason why they chose this supernatural anime to replace Dragon Ball Super.
Gundam Build Divers
Well, this is our final pick, and yes, it’s Gundam! However, this one is a mix of the classic Gundam battles with Gundam Build Fighters flair and a bit of Sword Art Online.
So, that’s our picks for this season’s returning anime, spin-offs, and reboots. You can also check out our picks for the Top 10 Anime of 2017, as well as our picks for new titles to watch out for next season!
