The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is perhaps one of celebrated Japanese director, Mamoru Hosoda’s greatest works. And now, his Studio Chizu has launched a special countdown website for the anime movie. Its title is “Mirai de Matteru”, which means “Waiting in the Future”.
However, the website doesn’t state what the countdown will be leading to. But it does feature the tag line, “Time waits for no one”. It looks like we would have to wait until it reaches zero, which is on July 18 at 12:00pm Japan Standard Time.
The original anime movie is based on Yasutaka Tsutsui’s 1965 novel The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It serves as a loose sequel to the novel, but with different characters. It went on to win several prestigious awards and is one of the most popular Japanese animated films not made by Studio Ghibli. It also propelled Mamoru Hosoda as one of Japan’s most celebrated animation directors, alongside greats like Hayao Miyazaki. The anime is also one of the most parodied films in Japan, with plenty of other media, as well as other anime, parodying the film’s iconic “leap”.
