Japanese voice acting agency, Aoni Production, has some very sad news for fans, as they announced that legendary seiyuu, Unshou Ishizuka, has recently passed away. According to their announcement, he lost his battle to esophageal cancer last August 13, 2018. He was 67.
He will continue to be the voice of both Professor Samuel Oak, Samson Oak, and the Narrator until October, as he has already recorded several lines. The Pokemon anime staff have yet to announce his replacement for the role, which Ishizuka has retained since 1997. The Fukui Prefecture native is also currently voicing Dino F. Golzine in Banana Fish, and was also supposed to be the narrator for the upcoming Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc to Renkin no Kishi anime.
His other significant roles include Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop, Sergei Smirnov in Gundam 00, and of course, Joseph Joestar in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. He also voiced Van Hohenheim in Fullmetal Alchemist, as well as Mr. Satan in the various Dragon Ball anime and video games.
He will be missed. Rest in peace Unshou Ishizuka.
