Saying that Hayao Miyazaki’s name is big in Japan is quite an understatement. Being the only Japanese animation director to also win an Oscar helps in cementing his legend too. And when someone of his stature would illustrate the logo of a local Japanese beer, you’d expect that beer to be a big-name brand, right? Well, actually, it’s just a local Niigata Prefecture-based craft beer called Echigo Beer.

As expected, the logo does look a bit like Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro. However, its belly consists of a few kanji characters which spell out a certain person’s name. Unfortunately, that person ain’t Hayao Miyazaki himself, but Studio Ghibli co-founder, Toshio Suzuki. This is because he contributed the caligraphy for 遊, pronounced yu, meaning “play” or “enjoyment.”

So, to sum it all up, Miyazaki drew the logo and incorporated Suzuki’s caligraphy, as well as his signature.

However, this Echigo Beer Pilsner is quite rare, and given who contributed to it, it’s only available over at the online shop of the brewery’s parent company here. A box of six bottles costs 4,320 yen, and will come with Miyazaki and Suzuki’s designs.
