When it comes to comics, the Eisner Awards are considered to be the most prestigious, as it’s the comic equivalent to an Oscar or a Grammy. It also has its own Hall of Fame called the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame, which is also the comic book industry’s most prestigious. It holds legends such as Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Osamu Tezuka, Alan Moore, and of course, Will Eisner himself. Now, Comic-Con International has announced the 16 nominees, and it features two names anime and manga fans might be familiar with. They are Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump mangaka Akira Toriyama and Monster and 20th Century Boys mangaka Naoki Urasawa.
However, the two will be up against some stiff competition, as they include Brian Bolland, Kevin Eastman, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Lynn Johnston, Jenette Kahn, Paul Levitz, Alex Niño, Lily Renée Wilhelm Peters Phillips, Wendy and Richard Pini, P. Craig Russell, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Don and Maggie Thompson. The judges also picked four automatic entries, and they are Jim Aparo, June Tarpé Mills, Dave Stevens, and Morrie Turner. Industry professionals such as editors, publishers and comic store owners can vote online for four nominees.
If they get picked, they will enter a Hall with some big names. Of course, these include a few Japanese mangaka like Osamu Tezuka (2002), Kazuo Koike (2004), Goseki Kojima (2004), Katsuhiro Otomo (2012), and Rumiko Takahashi (2018).
